Missileers: An Invisible Force
Overview
This exhibit showcases the extraordinary story of the men and women who operated and maintained missile systems, ensuring our nation’s defense while remaining hidden in plain sight.
The Role of Missileers
Missileers are highly trained military personnel responsible for the operation and maintenance of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Their mission is to ensure these powerful weapons are ready to launch at a moment’s notice, serving as a formidable deterrent against potential threats. This exhibit shines a light on their crucial yet often unrecognized role in safeguarding our nation.
Inside the Launch Control Center
Visitors will have the opportunity to view a missile launch control center, experiencing the high-stakes environment where missileers work. The exhibit showcases the rigorous protocols and procedures missileers follow to maintain constant vigilance and readiness. Displays will allow visitors to understand the complexities and responsibilities involved in this critical role.
Facts About Minuteman Missiles
- Minuteman ICBMs: The Minuteman missiles are a series of American ICBMs that have been the backbone of the U.S. nuclear deterrent force. The first Minuteman I was deployed in the early 1960s, followed by the Minuteman II and the current Minuteman III.
- Minuteman III: The Minuteman III, currently in service, is an advanced version with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs). This means a single missile can carry multiple warheads, each capable of striking different targets.
- Range and Speed: Minuteman III missiles have an operational range of over 6,000 miles (9,656 kilometers) and can travel at speeds exceeding 15,000 miles per hour (24,140 kilometers per hour), making them capable of reaching targets across the globe within minutes.
- Underground Silos: Minuteman missiles are housed in reinforced underground silos, providing protection and ensuring readiness. These silos are dispersed across several states, including Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming.
- Modernization: The Minuteman III program has undergone numerous upgrades over the decades to maintain its reliability and effectiveness. Continuous modernization efforts ensure these missiles remain a credible deterrent.
